This 6th Edition is the first revision since 1995. In this
edition, codes and titles have been added for many new types of
programs, some titles associated with existing codes have been modernized,
and some misaligned hierarchies have been corrected. One new major
category, "03 - Environmental Sciences and Technologies,"
has been created.
The Taxonomy of Programs is a system of numerical codes used at
the state level to collect and report information on programs and
courses, in different colleges throughout the state, that have similar
outcomes. It is used by the Academic Affairs and Educational Services
unit in the Inventory of Approved and Projected Programs, by the
Management Information Systems unit for a number of purposes, and
by the Vocational Education unit for accountability reports. It
also has limited uses by the Facilities and Fiscal units.
The TOP is not intended to be used to control any aspect of local
operations. For example, it does not control faculty minimum qualifications,
service areas, or load calculations; does not control how a college
organizes its programs into departments or divisions; and does not
control local budgeting or program review procedures.
Because of budget limitations, we will not be making any hard copy
distribution of this document. Please download it and reproduce
it as needed for district or campus personnel. It has had blank
pages inserted where needed, so that it will print out ready to
go directly for double-sided reproduction, with the pagination coming
out correctly. However, be sure that "Hidden Text" is
deselected in the "View" and "Print" tabs within
"Options" under the "Tools" menu; otherwise
index entry markers will interfere with readability and pagination.
We will be working with colleges soon to convert their present
Inventories of Approved and Projected Programs to the new TOP edition.
Details will be forthcoming.
We hope the revisions in this edition will provide the system with
a more accurate and complete picture of our curriculum. If you have
any questions or comments about the new TOP, please contact Charlie
Klein, Specialist in Academic Planning, at (916) 322-6888, fax (916)
324-4682, or e-mail to cklein@cccco.edu.
